World of Warcraft Drama » Creeeeeepy! WoW love = jail

Creeeeeepy! WoW love = jail

Thanks to Todd Conflict for this one:

He writes:

“Some people don’t like that their significant other plays too much WoW, some people travel halfway around the world to pick up an underage guy half their age that they met on WoW.

Amazing.”

The story on Kotaku goes like this:

A 31-year-old Australian university student is being held in lieu of $2.35 million bail in North Carolina after allegedly flying there to pick up her 17-year-old World of Warcraft boyfriend and fly him back to Adelaide with her, Pitt County Sheriff’s officials said.

Tamara Broome, who met the teen a year ago in the game, told her roommate that her travel to the U.S. last week had been paid for by the teen’s parents so “they could sort it all out.” Broome’s parents say the whole thing was a set up.

Broome was arrested after stepping off an Amtrak train in South Carolina last Saturday. She faces more than two years in jail if found guilty.

To think, one more year and this would have just been a happy story.

See also here for mainstream news coverage.

Inevitably, the comments bring some LuLz:

“on a side note where are all these lonely 30 something women that keep trying to screw around with underage guys? Don’t they know you can just go to a bar or frat house and at the very least be some guys last resort.”

“I like the whole paying her flight to get her arrested. That’s a bit like buying a car for your kid’s stalker and then getting pissed that they *might* end up in the trunk.”

“Ah, the perils of nerd love.”

” At least it really was a chick.”

“curse you parents! that was his first and only chance in hooking up with a woman, now he’s doomed to do unimaginable things to the night elf dancing animation >.> again.”

” But were they Alliance or Horde?”

She has to be a real recluse to not be able to find a guy in her area, or even a guy outside of her small town. What the heck happened to going out and having a good time with people your own age.

She’s not an ugly woman either. She could have gussied herself up and went out shopping or just out for a walk. With the right stuff she’d attract more guys to her instead of driving them away because she weirds them out.

Now the boy, he wasn’t thinking with the right head. He should’ve known that everything would’ve been ok in one more year or several months, give or take. His parents wouldn’t be able to stop him then. Speaking of the parents, they’re people who give the real pedo fighters (i.e. Perverted Justice) a bad name by trying to cooperate with the police in order to pull off a really sneaky arrest. An arrest that may not have happened if they didn’t bother to buy the woman’s plane ticket. I could see if the woman scrounged up enough money for her own ticket, then that would mean she’s serious about taking the boy away from his folks, which is kidnapping. But the parents set her up. I wish there were more details about this case.

Funny, I live in Adelaide and we’ve heard less about it than the rest of the world has… and it involves a person from here? All we got was a front page article in our Sunday newspaper that was totally incorrect and very misinformed about WoW itself. There was also very little info about the arrest. According to the paper the American police who arrested here weren’t commenting.

That`s kinda… Wrong by the parent`s. Not that 3 year old dating teenager 17 year old is that oaky (I mean… in a lot of USA states your adult at 17), but love is love, althought strange form of it.
